THE LEGACY QUILT PROJECT

The Legacy Quilt Project is a creative collaboration that combines storytelling, art, and intuition to build community and sustain our individual and collective commitments to racial equity. Together, we are creating a quilt that represents white women from history who boldly fought for liberty for all.

Practicing following their intuition, participants select a portrait of a white woman ancestor* printed on fabric. LQP participants then research her racial equity legacy and think of ways to visually celebrate her legacy using simple textile processes like embroidery and fabric collage. This is a project that is great for creative beginners and expert crafters - learning new skills from each other is another fun part of the collaboration! For more guidance with the creative side of things, participants can sign up for a workshop with me. To stay up to date with workshop opportunities and to support the project, you can join my Patreon page. When each participant finishes their quilt piece, I will gather them and lead a series of "conversations and quilting" events to piece the quilt together with the reverse side that I have created, pictured above. The quilt will live on as a storytelling tool for social justice and racial equity.

Hear what LQP participants have to say about the women they chose to honor and their experiences with the project.

"In every age, no matter how cruel the oppression carried on by those in power, there have been those who struggled for a different world. I believe this is the genius of humankind."

 Anne Braden

*I am starting with portraits of white women because this is how I identify and these are the legacies I can carry on. In the future, I hope to make more legacy quilts that tell the stories of many other lesser-known racial equity advocates, not just white women from history.
